SIGNIFICANCE
During the course of Alyss’ stay in the natural world, her adoptive parents become increasingly upset about the many pictures she draws of her home in Wonderland. They also are upset by her insistence of how her name is spelt. Eventually they yell at her so much about her imagination that she finally gives up and stops believing all together. It is becoming too painful for her to be herself.
Many children tend to get scolded for their imagination and whimsical thoughts and it can be very damaging. For Alyss, it made her forget almost entirely about her true life and self. Students who have lost their imagination due to scolding or intimidation from their peers may see a new light at the end of the tunnel with this novel as it depicts imagination as true power. The only way Alyss can beat Redd and restore her kingdom is by regaining the power of her White Imagination.
It is important to let students know that imagination is a wonderful thing. Once the TV comes out of its box, the box becomes a portal to a whole world; its where writers, painters, dreamers and thinkers come from. That is something to be celebrated.
