Wonderland's future— 150 years into the future.

El laberinto del fauno / Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
![Pan's Labyrinth](/uploads/2/4/5/5/24551803/2495702.png)
Mother always said to be wary of Fauns.
Guillermo del Toro shows us that magic is indeed real in our world. After the Spanish Civil War, young Ofelia is set to live under the influence of her authoritarian step-father, Captain Vidal. While caring for her ill pregnant mother, Ofelia discovers an alternative universe that exists within the cracks of her own reality. After exploring various places and seeing both horror and wonder, Ofelia is presented with a set of tasks as dictated by a mystical Faun. Her choices lead up to a crucial decision that rips the family apart.
Intended as a parable to other fantasy stories. Guillermo del Toro has created a piece that is set out to be it's own version of Wonderland, but with a twist. The harshness of war is the main topic of study in this story, as audiences will be confronted with the staunch reality of a child growing up under authoritarian control.

Once Upon A Time: In Wonderland (2013)
![Once Upon A Time: In Wonderland](/uploads/2/4/5/5/24551803/3836623.png)
A mix of drama with a hint of beauty.
In Victorian London, the young Alice explains a mystical tale about a new land of raw beauty and rich landscape. However, the story goes awry when Alice is admitted to a mental asylum for being hysterical with fantasies and strange ideas. Alice must save her own sanity before it's too late.
A mix of most Alice in Wonderland tales— specifically mixing themes from American McGee's reinvention and curving it around a modern landscape much like the Alice sci-fi original series. This Wonderland however, carries a price that must be fought after.
Authors: Edward Kitsis, Adam Horowitz, Zack Estrin, and Jane Espenson
Broadcast: ABC Studios (2013)

Black Rock Shooter (2010)
![Black Rock Shooter](/uploads/2/4/5/5/24551803/3598971.png)
I'll wish upon the stars that soar within the darkness.
A fan-made creation that spawned an entire cultural following in Japanese animation. Black Rock Shooter follows the fate of Mato Kuroi, a high school student who moves to a new town, and is the outcast at her school. After befriending one single friend, Yomi Takanashi, the two become inseparable. After time however, an event wrecks their friendship, and the two grow distant without hesitation. Mato has a great sense of remorse, and after staring at the night sky one evening, she is transported to another universe full of chaos and raw elemental landscapes. In this world, a battle between the Black Rock Shooter and Dead Master wages for centuries, but the new influence of Mato can sway the battle to either side.
The story revolves around the internal conflict between the two girls, but other characters are introduced as the story progresses. The main concept behind the other universe is that the protagonist, Black Rock Shooter, is a direct reflection of Mato's inner personality, while Dead Master is a negative representation of Yomi. The two characters clash internally, and emotions come to a crashing halt when things become too dangerous.

The Matrix (1999)
![Follow the White Rabbit...](/uploads/2/4/5/5/24551803/5722425.png)
I know Kung-fu.
The year 1999— a period of technological growth and economic stability for the majority of the world. The United States remains pristine in personality, and content with progress. Life is simple. Life is average. Life is also a lie.
Thomas Anderson, computer programmer and double-life hacker. He is a person who explores the reaches of the internet while also doing illegal activities. After a time, Md. Anderson comes to question the reality around him, and in time comes a message from another mysterious hacker. After exploring the rabbit hole even further, Mr. Anderson has been entrapped within a dream-like reality known as The Matrix. His new partners help him escape, where he is then given a version of the truth that rocks him to the core.
The Matrix was specifically chosen because of its overbearing themes on philosophy and imagination. Many of the same archetypes, themes, and symbols from Alice in Wonderland appear in the film, and the concept of "finding one's self" is heavily apparent throughout the plot. This is one classic, that shouldn't be missed.

Inception (2010)
![Inception](/uploads/2/4/5/5/24551803/9383693.png)
You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.
Thievery and corporate espionage— but in this world, the items of desire are the dreams of selected targets.
Cobb & Arthur are part of a select group of people that commit theft of one's dreams. Known as "Extractors," they invade the minds of different individuals and read the signs within a person's subconscious to steal memories or dreams. Extraction is often risky however, as there are many rules to be followed within the dream world.
After failing to extract information from a selected target, Cobb and Arthur become selected by a high ranking Japanese businessman named Saito. They become contracted to perform the most difficult of tasks with the world of dream extraction— known as Inception. The plan is to "plant" an original idea within a target, and have the idea become a part of the person's personality; the only way this will work however, is by use of dreams-within-dreams.
Inception often stands as a "modern Matrix" film— one that is able to successfully balance complexity with suspense.
Unlike media like Serial Experiments Lain and The Matrix, Inception brings a unique perspective into the discussion of fantasy versus reality. In this world, extraction is a well known military practice, and is only dangerous for those that overindulge in the act of entering the dream world. In some ways, reality is willingly given up (sometimes permanently) for the sake of exploring the dream world. There is no control, only choice.

Serial Experiments Lain (1998)
![Serial Experiments Lain](/uploads/2/4/5/5/24551803/6822183.png)
Close the world,
ʇxƎu ǝɥʇ uǝdO.
What if we were in Wonderland, and the real world was no longer necessary to carry life?
Often considered Yoshitoshi ABe's magnum opus, Serial Experiments Lain dives into the world of Cyberpunk full force in an attempt to establish a philosophical layer of discussion similar to The Matrix.
Lain Iwakura is a 14-year old girl attending junior high— introverted and separated from most of her peers, she becomes integrated into social circles when something strange happens to the school. Students from the junior high begin receiving text messages and emails from a student who recently committed suicide. Lain's message in particular, draws her to enter the world of The Wired. This realm is an advanced virtual reality communication protocol, similar to the internet, but with far more expansive borders. Lain becomes obsessed with The Wired, and secludes herself during the day to work on building better and faster computer equipment.
Something in The Wired is changing because of her presence.
Serial Experiments Lain is often considered to be one of the most definitive Japanese animation projects to be published in the last 20 years. The show remains minimalistic at best; rather than have exorbitant scenes of character dialogue and plot progression, Serial Experiments Lain instead focuses on the slow development of each plot point by means of visual style. In some instances, the show can be described as an abstract painting, one rich
with symbolism and culture. Themes revolve around the concepts of social isolation, reality versus fantasy, drug use,
suicide, and the creation of life. Often compared to The Matrix for it's philosophical discussions, Serial Experiments
Lain is an anime that is easily one of the most ground-breaking in the medium.

Spirited Away (2001)
![Spirited Away](/uploads/2/4/5/5/24551803/9383413.png)
Once you do something, you never forget— even if you can't remember.
One of the most definitive Japanese animation films to ever be created— Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece Spirited Away follows a Japanese-inspired version of Alice in Wonderland.
10-year old Chihiro Ogino is on a roadtrip with her parents to their new home when a wrong turn gets the family lost in a bizarre train station area. The family explores the other side of the vast tunnel only to find that the tunnel has transported them into a massive clear valley, akin to rural Japan. The parents wonder and Chihiro later discovers that they have been turned into pigs because of a taboo that was broken in a nearby town.
Chihiro searches for a way out, and comes across a massive bathhouse where the spirits of the underworld go to rest. After becoming employed, and losing her name to the evil witch Yubaba, she is set to slave away in the bathhouse in order to help her escape. Along the way however, a stalking spirit makes things complicated.
Highly praised as one of the greatest films ever made, Spirited Away has received world-wide acclaim and awards in all major countries— even being within the top ten on the British Film Institute's list of the "top 50 films one should see by the age of 14." Spirited Away deals with a slew of themes that are only truly apparent to Japanese audiences, but the culture-rich film does feature mirroring themes with Alice in Wonderland, so other audiences will still enjoy.

Sucker Punch (2011)
![Sucker Punch](/uploads/2/4/5/5/24551803/3122089.png)
And if you do, it will set you free.
A twist on Alice in Wonderland with a pinch of spice. Zach Snyder's Sucker Punch covers the story of Babydoll, a young woman living in the mid 1960's with an abusive stepfather. After being forced into a mental asylum for a crime she didn't commit, Babydoll falls into a state of fantasy, and must use her powers of imagination to help her escape the reality that traps her. Along the way, she establishes a team of other inmates who help her divert the warden's plans.
Another instance of fantasy bleeding into reality— Sucker Punch is a visual feast that will impress action-hungry young adults and anyone with an appreciation for anime-style action. There's no heavy philosophical filter to be sifted through on this film— just straight up adrenaline to the heart and mind.
What other film features a schoolgirl equipped with a katana and pistol, fighting a 2-story tall samurai warrior— or an army of zombie German soldiers in a steampunk-world-war-one battlefield?

Coraline (2009)
![Coraline](/uploads/2/4/5/5/24551803/2796803.png)
They say even the proudest spirit can be broken... with love.
The feature film version of Neil Gaiman's novel;
Coraline Jones is a girl seeking excitement. Forced to relocate with her lackluster parents, young Coraline now lives in an old mansion full of dusty secrets and curious neighbors. After exploring the old house there appears one day a locked door that appears different than the rest. Ignoring warnings from the odd neighbors, Miss Forcible and Miss Spink, Coraline opens the door and is greeted with a passageway connected to another door.
The Other World— much like Coraline's world, but perfect.
Coraline traverses the passage, and opens the accompanying door to a realm of simplicity— her normal surroundings but with a shining touch of perfection. Her parents, no longer introverted awkward excuses for adults! Now they act with gusto, and flourish Coraline with everything her heart desires. There's only one glaring difference in Other World however. Her parents, where their eyes should be, have nothing but two soulless buttons sewed to their faces. Does she stay in bliss, or return to her normal world?
Neil Gaiman's prized novel deals with issues of teen anxiety, parental distance/reluctance, and imagination versus reality. The progression of the story builds upon Coraline's stress between choosing to live in the Other World or the Real World, and her Other Parents present her with a decision that has a permanent conclusion.

Tim Burton's: Alice in Wonderland (2010)
![Alice in Wonderland](/uploads/2/4/5/5/24551803/3999750.png)
You're almost Alice.
Tim Burton's rendition of the classic Alice in Wonderland, however this version seems to borrow ideas from major reproductions of the classic story.
19-year old Alice Kingsleigh is confronted with a marriage proposal that seems less than adequate. After fleeing from the scene, she accidentally falls into a large rabbit hole and comes out in Wonderland. The plot focuses around Alice's predestined role as the savior of Wonderland— destined to defeat the Red Queen and bring order to the land.
